The characters Velma and Roxie from the stage and screen versions of Chicago are based on real life murder cases from the 1920’s. Journalist Maurine Watkins wrote for the Chicago Tribune during this time and followed the trials of two murderesses – Belva Gaertner and Beulah Annan. Read more about them HERE.
